Mr. Nobody
Short description
In a future where medical advances have made people immortal, Nemo Nobody is the last mortal on Earth, a very old man nearing death in 2092. Doctors and journalists take great interest in him, but his memories are muddled and contradictory. He recalls his parents' separation and the choices that followed, and from those branching possibilities he recounts several versions of his life, each shaped by a different love and marriage. What actually happened to him remains uncertain.
Jaco Van Dormael wrote and directed the film, his third feature after Toto the Hero and The Eighth Day. Jared Leto plays Nemo in his adult and elderly forms, with Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger and Linh-Dan Pham as the women in his possible lives, and Rhys Ifans and Natasha Little as his parents. Philippe Godeau produced, and the credited cast runs to 86.
Released in 2009, the film was an ambitious international co-production from Germany, Belgium, Canada and France. Its 47 million dollar budget far exceeded its 3 million dollar worldwide gross, so it drew little at the box office relative to its cost. Audiences have since rated it highly, at 7.7 on IMDb from some 257,000 votes and 7.8 on TMDB from over 6,000. The critics' score of 6.4 from 28 reviews is more measured than those viewer figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the beginning of the film, a newspaper states that the old man is turning 118, when it should be 117, as it was the year 2092 and he was born in 1975.
- The pre-production stage lasted a year, and post-production took fifteen months.
- Van Dormael's daughters appeared as angels in one of the scenes.
- The voice of the 118-year-old man also belongs to Jared Leto without the use of computer technology.
- The street where Nemo's parents first met is called Butterfly Lane. This is a reference to the "butterfly effect" (a term in natural sciences meaning the property of some chaotic systems: a small influence on the system can have large and unpredictable consequences elsewhere and at another time).
- The film's soundtrack was the last work in cinema by the famous Belgian musician and composer Pierre Van Dormael (the director's brother), who died of cancer on September 3, 2008.
- In the director's cut of the film, Nemo abruptly rides off on a moped without a helmet. In the next shot, the helmet is already on and fastened, and the street has become darker.
- A director's cut of the film exists with a runtime of 155 minutes.
- The film features a cameo by the director – an unemployed Brazilian man boiling a chicken egg.
- "Nemo" translates from Latin as "Nobody." This is the name Odysseus gave to the Cyclops.
