Short description
Frank Martin, a specialist in high-risk deliveries, has settled into a quiet life on the French Riviera after his previous exploits in Miami. That ends when Johnson, a former soldier, forces him to take on a new job: transporting Valentina, the abducted daughter of a Ukrainian government official, along with two large bags, from Marseille to Odessa on the Black Sea. Frank is given little information about the cargo or the girl, and criminals along the route want to seize her before he completes the delivery. Adding to the pressure is the explosive bracelet locked onto his wrist, which prevents him from moving more than a short distance from his car.
Transporter 3 was released in 2008 and marks Olivier Megaton's first time directing an entry in the series, following Louis Leterrier and Corey Yuen. Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen wrote the screenplay, and Besson produced with Steve Chasman. Jason Statham returns as Frank Martin, joined by Natalya Rudakova as Valentina, Robert Knepper as Johnson, and François Berléand, who again plays Inspector Tarconi.
Made for around 30 million dollars, the film earned roughly 109 million worldwide, a solid return for an action sequel. Audiences were moderately receptive: it holds a rating of 6.1 on IMDb from about 185,000 votes, and 6.2 on TMDB from a much smaller pool. A critics' score of 4.9 from 115 reviews places it below the audience ratings. Megaton went on to direct Colombiana, two films in the Taken series, and The Last Days of American Crime.
What's left behind the scenes
- Jason Statham did not film in Odessa. A stunt double was used in the shots filmed in Odessa. In these episodes, the upper part of the face is in shadow.
- In one scene, Frank breaks the windshield of his car, but subsequent shots show the windshield intact and undamaged.
- The film features the song 'I Wanna be your Dog' by The Stooges. The same song was used in the film 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' (1998), which also starred Jason Statham.
- Residents of Odessa could recognize several easily identifiable objects of Odessa architecture in the film: the airport, the tram depot, Pushkinskaya Street, route taxi No. 175, the portside overpass, and the Railway Station Square.
- In the gas station scene, when Frank is holding the girl's hand, the bomb bracelet is on her wrist, but in a subsequent shot it is closer to her elbow.
- When Statham's A8 was shown for the first time, the license plate was AEJ, and for the rest of the time it was AJE.
- Footage of Odessa is shown during the arrival scene in Budapest.
- In the scenes where Johnson's specialist tracks Frank's car, the computers display the status of torrent tracker servers, not a GPS program.
- At the very beginning of the film, during the document check, Malcolm's Audi displays license plates with both yellow and white backgrounds.
