My Father and My Son follows Sadık, a left-wing journalist living in Istanbul, whose wife dies while giving birth during the military coup of September 1980. Years later, in poor health after being tortured, he brings his young son Deniz to the Aegean village where he grew up. Sadık has long been estranged from his father Hüseyin, a landowner who disowned him for abandoning the family farm to study in the city and take up political activism. Father and son attempt a cautious reconciliation so that Deniz will have a home, and the boy meets his grandfather and a large extended family he has never known.
The film was directed by Çağan Irmak from his own screenplay, and was his first feature. It stars Fikret Kuşkan as Sadık, Ege Tanman as Deniz and Çetin Tekindor as Hüseyin, with Hümeyra, Şerif Sezer and Yetkin Dikinciler among the credited cast of twenty-four. Produced by Şükrü Avşar through Avşar Film, it runs 112 minutes and is set in Turkey.
The film drew a large audience in Turkey and holds an 8.2 rating on IMDb from around 100,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.4 from roughly 400 votes. Its worldwide box office of about 4 million dollars reflects a domestic release that reached viewers well beyond the art-house circuit. Irmak went on to direct The Messenger and Alone in 2008, My Grandfather's People in 2011 and Adile Nasit in 2025.
