Short description
Hedwig and the Angry Inch centers on a singer from East Berlin who came to the United States after a failed sex-change operation, the source of the film's title. Now touring with a small band through bars, clubs and shopping-mall venues, Hedwig performs the songs her former lover and protégé Tommy Gnosis took from her and turned into a successful career. Between numbers, Hedwig tells the audience the story of her life: her East German childhood, the operation, the marriage that got her out of the country, and the relationships that followed. The film mixes concert footage, flashbacks and animation to build that life story.
John Cameron Mitchell directed and wrote the screenplay, his first feature as director. He also stars as Hedwig, with Miriam Shor as Yitzhak, Stephen Trask as Skszp, Theodore Liscinski as Jacek, Rob Campbell as Krzysztof and Michael Aronov as Schlatko among a credited cast of 27. Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler and Katie Roumel produced for New Line Cinema and Killer Films. Mitchell went on to direct Shortbus, Rabbit Hole and How to Talk to Girls at Parties.
Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide. Its critical reception was stronger than its commercial performance, with a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 117 reviews, while audiences give it 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- John Cameron Mitchell had to wear so much makeup that after lunch he would return to his trailer, shave while still in makeup, and then go to the makeup artists to have it touched up before returning to the set.
- In the film, the character Miriam Shor is shown wearing a hoodie with the inscription “Rent,” and later she auditions for a role in Chris Columbus’s melodramatic musical “Rent” (2005, released as “Rent” in English-speaking markets). In reality, director John Cameron Mitchell was offered this very role, but he declined because he was filming “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” at the time.
- Unlike most musical films, many of the musical pieces here are performed live on camera. Director and lead actor John Cameron Mitchell disliked the idea of having to synchronize sound to the image later, so the band recorded the songs in the studio, after which the music was played in front of the camera, and Mitchell sang for real.
