The Legend of 1900

The Legend of 1900 tells the story of a boy found as an infant aboard the SS Virginian, a large ocean liner crossing between Europe and America. A stoker from the boiler room, Danny Boodmann, discovers him and raises him as his own, giving him the name Danny Boodmann T.D. Lemon 1900. After Danny's death, the crew takes over the boy's upbringing, and he spends his whole life on the ship without ever setting foot on land. He teaches himself to play the piano and becomes a virtuoso, performing with the ship's orchestra and drawing attention from celebrated jazz musicians. Years later, a friend and bandmate, Max Tooney, tries to persuade him to leave the vessel.

Giuseppe Tornatore directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Alessandro Baricco. The film followed A Pure Formality in Tornatore's filmography and preceded Malena. Tim Roth plays the adult 1900, with Pruitt Taylor Vince as Max, Bill Nunn as Danny Boodmann, Mélanie Thierry as a young woman known as The Girl, Gabriele Lavia as a farmer, and Clarence Williams III as Jelly Roll Morton. Made for a budget of around 9 million dollars, it took roughly 21 million dollars worldwide.

Audience responses have been strong: on IMDb it holds 8 out of 10 from about 73,000 votes, and on TMDB 8.2 out of 10 from around 2,500 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 40 reviews, notably lower than the audience scores. Across its 170-minute running time, the film remains a drama shaped by music and by a life confined to a single ship.
