Short description
Push is a science fiction thriller set in Hong Kong, where Nick Gant, a young American with telekinetic abilities, hides from Division, a clandestine government agency that exploits people with psychic powers. Nick's father, an assassin, was killed by the agency years earlier, and the memory has kept Nick in the shadows. He is drawn out when Cassie Holmes, a teenage clairvoyant, approaches him with a request to help find a missing young woman and recover a stolen suitcase. Their search brings them up against Division operatives and others pursuing the same prize.
The film is directed by Paul McGuigan, its screenplay written by David Bourla. It followed Lucky Number Slevin in McGuigan's filmography and stars Chris Evans as Nick, Dakota Fanning as Cassie, Camilla Belle as Kira Hudson, Djimon Hounsou as Henry Carver, Cliff Curtis as Hook Waters, and Ming-Na Wen as Emily Hu. A Canadian-American co-production from Summit Entertainment, Icon Productions and Infinity Features Entertainment, it was made for about 38 million dollars and took roughly 50 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 119,000 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 6.1 out of 10, from around 2,500 votes. Both sets of viewers land in similar territory, indicating a modest reception for the film on release and afterward.
What's left behind the scenes
- Paul McGuigan noticed Chris Evans (Nick) after watching "Cellular" (2007), where Evans played one of the main roles.
- The original title can be translated as “Suggestion”.
- To ideally recreate the hectic atmosphere of Hong Kong, the entire film crew hid in vans, and the cameraman filmed through small, inconspicuous windows, so that the people in the background of the actors wouldn't suspect anything. The scene where the heroine, Camilla Belle (Kira), is kidnapped on a crowded street was filmed using the same “guerrilla” method, with no one around suspecting a thing. Surprisingly, none of the passersby even attempted to “help” the actress.
- Types of psychics in the film: Movers (capable of telekinesis), Pushers (capable of controlling the thoughts and memories of surrounding people), Watchers (capable of seeing the future), Bleeders (emit loud screams capable of bursting blood vessels), Sniffs (using a person's belongings, they can track them), Shifters (capable of temporarily replacing an object with any other), Wipers (capable of erasing memory), Shadows (capable of hiding themselves and surrounding people from the powers of other psychics), and Stitchers (capable of healing themselves and any other person).
- The film was delivered to cinemas under the false title "Kinetic".
- At the end of the film, when Nick is released from the car, his sweatshirt gets dirty, but after he walks up to the window, he is wearing a clean sweater.
- The film was released in Chilean cinemas under the title “Heroes”.
- Director Paul McGuigan used digital effects to a minimum while creating the film. The only scene shot on a green screen was the car chase (and it was only shot that way due to the intense Hong Kong traffic).
- Director Paul McGuigan was inspired to move the setting to Hong Kong by "Casablanca" (1942). According to him, Casablanca in the 30s and 40s was a haven for scoundrels and a city where one could truly hide, while Hong Kong in the 2000s was equivalent to Casablanca in the 30s and 40s.
- Nico Gant could have played Channing Tatum.
