Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 is set in the coal-mining region around Wasseypur, in the Indian state of Jharkhand, and follows a feud that runs across generations. Shahid Khan falls out with the powerful Ramadhir Singh, who has the region's politics and underworld in his grip, and is killed for it. His son Sardar Khan grows up determined to avenge his father and to make himself the most feared man in Wasseypur, a goal that shapes his family life as well as his criminal one. The film draws on real events in the area, and the rivalry passes down through the families involved.
Anurag Kashyap directed and co-wrote the film with Zeishan Quadri; Guneet Monga and Sunil Bohra produced it with him. It was the second feature Kashyap had directed, arriving between No Smoking in 2007 and its own continuation, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2, released later the same year. Manoj Bajpayee plays Sardar Khan, with Tigmanshu Dhulia as Ramadhir Singh, Richa Chadha as Nagma, Reema Sen as Durga, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Faizal Khan and Huma Qureshi as Mohsina Hamid.
Made for about one million dollars, the film took roughly four million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from around 113,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from about 460 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from 32 reviews places it alongside the much larger IMDb audience score.
