Magnificent Obsession

Magnificent Obsession is a romantic drama about a wealthy, careless young man named Bob Merrick, whose speedboat accident sets off a chain of events that changes two lives. The only resuscitator in town is rushed to save him, and while it is in use, the respected local doctor Phillips suffers a fatal heart attack. Consumed by guilt, Bob tries to make amends to the doctor's widow, Helen, and gradually falls in love with her. A second accident leaves Helen blind, and Bob sets out to help her while keeping his role in her misfortune hidden from her.

Douglas Sirk directed the film, which sits between Lured and Shockproof in his earlier American period and All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life in the run of melodramas that followed. Robert Blees wrote the screenplay, and Ross Hunter produced. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson lead the cast as Helen and Bob, with Barbara Rush, Agnes Moorehead, Otto Kruger and Gregg Palmer among the credited players.
