The Collection
Short description
The Collection continues the story of Arkin, who survived the traps of a masked killer known as the Collector in the earlier film. At a party, the killer seizes a young woman named Elena and takes her to a hidden location. Arkin, still recovering in a hospital, is forced by Elena's wealthy father and a team of mercenaries to help find her, since he is the only person who has faced the killer and lived. The search leads into a building rigged with deadly traps.
Marcus Dunstan directed and co-wrote the film with Patrick Melton, following their 2009 film The Collector. It is the second of five features Dunstan has directed, ahead of The Neighbor, Unhuman and #AMFAD: All My Friends Are Dead. Josh Stewart returns as Arkin, with Emma Fitzpatrick as Elena, Christopher McDonald as her father and Lee Tergesen among the mercenaries.
Released in 2012, the horror thriller runs 82 minutes and was produced by LD Entertainment and Fortress Features on a budget of about 10 million dollars, with a worldwide box office of roughly the same amount. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 58,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 50 reviews places it below the audience scores. It is a sequel, so viewers are expected to know the first film.
What's left behind the scenes
- Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Atlanta, which is also where the fictional “Argento Hotel” (named after the legendary horror film director) is located – a former boarding school that served as the Collector's lair. Most of the indoor scenes, including the hospital scenes, were filmed at “CBS Studio Center” in Los Angeles. Dunstan noted that thanks to executive producer Tom Luse (known for the film “Jeepers Creepers” (2001)), the film’s budget was spent with maximum efficiency.
- Regarding devising the complex mechanisms that the Collector uses to maim his victims, the filmmakers drew on their experience from the "Saw" franchise.
- The prequel to the film, the horror movie "The Collector" (2009), draws its roots from a gentler period in cinematic history. Specifically, in 1967, Terence Young directed "Wait Until Dark" (1967) starring Alan Arkin and Audrey Hepburn. The innovative tension of this thriller had a strong influence. Hepburn played a blind woman terrorized by three bandits searching for a doll filled with heroin, which they believed was in her apartment. Out of respect for "Wait Until Dark" (1967), the screenwriters even gave the main character the name Arkin, in honor of Alan Arkin, and gave the character Elena a hearing impairment.
