Rawhead Rex

An American researcher of pre-Christian cultures travels through rural Ireland with his wife and children, combining a family holiday with his study of pagan traces in old country churches. In one village he finds a painted church window depicting a monstrous being, and an account of its reign of terror that breaks off before the creature's death. Around the same time, a local farmer disturbs a large standing stone in his field and unknowingly frees the demon that had been imprisoned beneath it. The creature, Rawhead Rex, begins killing its way across the countryside, while the researcher tries to work out how it can be stopped.

The film was directed by George Pavlou and written by Clive Barker, adapting Barker's own story, with Charles Band among its producers. David Dukes plays Howard Hallenbeck, Niall Tóibín appears as Reverend Coot, Donal McCann as Tom Garron and Heinrich von Schellendorf as the creature; almost thirty performers are credited in all. It was made in the United Kingdom and Ireland and runs eighty-nine minutes.

On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from ten reviews, while on TMDB it averages 5.3 out of 10 from 147 votes, a small sample that indicates modest and divided interest. It followed Pavlou's earlier feature and remains one of the horror titles associated with Empire Pictures in the mid-1980s.
