Short description
City of Ember is set in an underground city built as a refuge meant to last two hundred years, its streets lit by streetlamps and powered by a generator drawing on a subterranean river. When the generator begins to fail and blackouts and flickering lights grow more frequent, the residents fear that the darkness may become permanent. Two teenagers, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, come into possession of a mysterious box containing instructions left by the city's founders, and they set out to decipher it and find a way out of Ember.
The film was directed by Gil Kenan, following his debut Monster House, and was written by Caroline Thompson. It stars Saoirse Ronan and Harry Treadaway, with Bill Murray as Mayor Cole, Tim Robbins as Loris Harrow, David Ryall and Mackenzie Crook.
Released in 2008, the film earned about 18 million USD worldwide against a budget of 55 million USD. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from roughly 73,000 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 6.4, from a smaller base of about 1,954 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 129 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The rights to adapt the novel were acquired by Tom Hanks' production company Playtone back in 2004. At that time, they also secured an option for a sequel based on the second part of the trilogy, but all such plans fell through after the film's complete failure at the box office.
- The film became the last acting role for 86-year-old British actress Liz Smith at the time, who announced the end of her long acting career in July 2009.
- The main filming location was an abandoned paint hall at the Harland and Wolf shipyard on the site known as Titanic’s Quarters, named after the famous ocean liner built there. The general view of the underground city was recreated there, and there were so many various small additional filming locations that some of them remained practically unused.
- Filming took place from June to October 2007.
- The film is based on Jeanne DuPrau's novel "The City of Ember: Escape" (2003).
