Short description

In a Los Angeles hospital during the 1920s, a stuntman named Roy Walker is recovering from a fall suffered while working on a film. He befriends a young patient, Alexandria, who has a broken arm, and begins telling her an elaborate tale of five mythic heroes and the villainous Governor Odious they set out to defeat. The story spans the globe, and as Roy's state of mind grows more troubled, the border between the invented world and the hospital around them becomes harder to keep apart.

Tarsem Singh directed and co-wrote the film with Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis, and he also produced it with Soultanakis and Lionel Kopp. It was his second feature, following The Cell in 2000 and preceding Immortals, Mirror Mirror and Self/less. Lee Pace plays Roy, with Justine Waddell as Nurse Evelyn, Daniel Caltagirone as Sinclair and Governor Odious, Leo Bill as Darwin, Sean Gilder as Walt Purdy and Julian Bleach as Mystic. The production involved 32 credited cast members and 68 credited crew.

The film was made on a budget of about 30 million USD and took roughly 4 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.8/10 from around 128,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.6/10 from about 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5/10 from 117 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Scenes featuring Alexander the Great were filmed in Rome.
  • According to director Tarsem Singh, the entire film crew received the same salary and lived in equal conditions. Tarsem also clarified that this equality was stipulated in the contracts of all employees.
  • Scenes with Katinka Untaru were filmed in chronological order. Filming lasted six weeks, during which Katinka's English noticeably improved. She also lost two front teeth before filming began.
  • The film was shot in 26 locations in 18 countries around the world.
  • Jitu Verme owns most of the horses that appear in the film.
  • The magic word Googly, which Alexandra repeats in the film, is the name of the production company.
  • A misunderstanding between the casting agent and Katinka Untaru led her to believe that Lee Pace genuinely suffered from paralysis in his lower limbs. Upon learning this, Tarsem Singh and the entire film crew tried to keep the truth hidden for as long as possible to enhance the authenticity of the dialogue between Katinka and Lee.
  • The name of Darwin Wallace the monkey is a reference to Alfred Russel Wallace, who independently of Darwin developed the theory of natural selection. Darwin and Wallace presented the theory together.
  • The scene in which Alexandria, at Roy’s request, brings him a jar containing only three morphine pills originated from a mistake made by 6-year-old actress Katinka Untaru. Katinka read the handwritten word “MORPHINE” as “morphin3.”
  • The film was shot in 26 locations in 18 countries.
