Sukiyaki Western Django

A nameless gunman arrives in a remote mountain village where two rival clans are locked in a bitter feud. Dressed in white, the Genji and, in red, the Heike fight over rumours of hidden gold, and both want the stranger to take their side. He has a dark past and unusual skill with a gun, but he chooses his own path, and his arrival pushes the standoff toward open violence. Set centuries after the Battle of Dannoura, the film retells that clan conflict in the style of a spaghetti western, with betrayal, greed and desire mixing into the struggle for power.

Takashi Miike directed and co-wrote the film with Masaru Nakamura, and it was produced by Masao Owaki. It is the twentieth of the forty-two films Miike has directed in chronological order, coming after Crows Zero and before Zatoichi Live. The cast includes Hideaki Ito as the Gunman, Koichi Sato as Kiyomori, Yusuke Iseya as Yoshitsune, Kaori Momoi as Ruriko, Teruyuki Kagawa as the Sheriff and Takaaki Ishibashi as the Village Mayor.

Made in Japan on a budget of about four million dollars, the film took roughly three million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from more than 360 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 55 reviews sits close to those audience scores.
