Short description

Patch, one of the many Dalmatian puppies in the family, feels ordinary among so many spotted siblings and longs to stand out. Through a mishap during the family's move to the countryside, he is left behind in London, where he crosses paths with Thunderbolt, the canine star of a television series he admires. The two become partners, while Cruella De Vil returns with a new scheme to capture the puppies, aided by an eccentric artist whose work revolves around spots.

Jim Kammerud and Brian Smith directed this animated sequel, which followed Kammerud's The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) and preceded his The Fox and the Hound 2 (2006) and Smith's Tarzan II (2005). Both men also wrote the screenplay, with Carolyn Bates and Leslie Hough producing. The voice cast includes Bobby Lockwood as Patch, Barry Bostwick as Thunderbolt, Jason Alexander as Lightning, Martin Short as Lars, Susanne Blakeslee as Cruella, and Samuel West as Pongo, among 38 credited performers.

Released in 2003, the film runs 74 minutes and continues the story of the 1961 animated feature. Its ratings sit in mixed territory: on IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from around 12,000 votes, on TMDB 6/10 from roughly 1,269 votes, and a film critics' rating of 5/10 from six reviews, so audience and critical responses fall close together.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Two interactive games were released based on the cartoon's plot: 'Lost in London' and 'Patch's Night Adventure'.
  • In the first cartoon, many puppies had black ears. But in the second cartoon, only Patch has a black ear. This was done by the creators to show that Patch is 'one of a kind'.
  • In the first cartoon, 15 puppies are known to have been kidnapped, while the rest were bought by Cruella. In the second part, according to some characters, all 101 Dalmatians are known. Moreover, according to the first cartoon, the total number of Dalmatian puppies was 99, plus two adults (the parents), as evidenced by the second half of the second cartoon, but in its first half, only the number of puppies is mentioned as 101.
  • Larz's painting "Black Circle" is a reference to Kazimir Malevich's "Black Circle".
  • Patch is distinguished by a black spot around his right eye and a black right ear. In the second cartoon, the left ear turns black.
  • In the cartoon, the dog Thunder says to Patch that he once knew "a guy who had 10 or 12 puppies," but he doesn't remember the exact number. Notably, Pongo (the father of the Dalmatian family) originally had 15 puppies in the first cartoon.
  • During the scenes “The Audition” and “Twilight Barking”, several characters from the cartoons “Lady and the Tramp” (Jock, Trusty) and “Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure” (Scamp) appear.
  • In the first cartoon, Cruella de Vil has pale gray skin and a pale yellow coat. In this cartoon, her skin and coat are white.
  • There is a 7-minute documentary film where ordinary dogs travel around the Disney studio and learn about how the cartoon was made. This documentary is used in the DVD releases of the cartoon.
