Short description

In 1930s Texas, a widow and her family fight to save their home by harvesting cotton.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When Danny Glover's character pushes Yankton Hatton's character into the basement, his headwear remains in place despite the raging hurricane around them.
  • Jennie James was cast as Possum Spalding because the girl originally chosen for the role cried every time the cameras started rolling. That girl and James were actually friends from a small town in Texas.
  • The name of Sally Field's character (whose name was Edna) is spoken on screen only once during the entire movie. The rest of the time, she is referred to as either "Mrs. Spalding," "sis," or "ma'am."
  • In 1935, when the film is set, cotton prices did not drop that low. In that year, the price fluctuated between 11 and 12 cents per pound and tended to increase.
