Breaker Morant

Breaker Morant is set during the Boer War in South Africa, where three Australian lieutenants face a court-martial for the shooting of Boer prisoners. Harry 'Breaker' Morant, Peter Handcock and George Witton carried out the killings under orders, yet the General Staff puts them on trial as scapegoats, hoping to distance itself from the irregular conduct of the campaign. Major J.F. Thomas defends them, and the proceedings do not unfold as smoothly as the staff had planned. The story draws on real events.

Bruce Beresford directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Hardy and David Stevens; Matt Carroll produced it for the South Australian Film Corporation. It was Beresford's second feature, following Money Movers and preceding Tender Mercies. Edward Woodward plays Morant, with Jack Thompson as Thomas, Bryan Brown as Handcock, John Waters, Charles Tingwell and Terence Donovan among the credited cast of 42.

Released in 1980, the film runs 107 minutes and took about 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.8 from roughly 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.1 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 8.5 from 23 reviews places it above both audience scores.
