Me and You and Everyone We Know follows Christine Jesperson, a performance artist who drives a taxi for elderly passengers while waiting for her work to be recognised, and Richard Swersey, a shoe salesman recently separated from his wife and raising two sons. The two meet and are drawn to each other, but Richard, still bruised by the end of his marriage, holds back while Christine is more willing to take the risk. Around them, Richard's boys navigate their own tentative first encounters: seven-year-old Robby with an online acquaintance, and fourteen-year-old Peter with neighbourhood girls who practice their romantic futures on him.
The film is the debut feature of Miranda July, who wrote and directed it and also plays Christine. It is the first of the three features she has directed, followed by Somebody and Kajillionaire, and it sits alongside the work of a cast that includes John Hawkes, Brandon Ratcliff, Miles Thompson, Carlie Westerman and Brad William Henke. It was produced by Gina Kwon for Film4 Productions, Celluloid Dreams and IFC Productions.
Released in 2005 and running 91 minutes, the film drew a critics' rating of 7.6/10 from 115 reviews, while audiences gave it 7.2/10 on IMDb from around 39,000 votes and 7/10 on TMDB from roughly 388 votes. The critical score sits above the audience scores, and the large IMDb vote count points to a wide viewership.
