Short description

Following a global pandemic that decimated the human population, a pilot named Hig lives in isolation at a Colorado airfield. Alongside his dog and a grumpy companion, he maintains a secluded existence until he intercepts a mysterious radio transmission while flying his plane. This discovery motivates Hig to travel across dangerous territories and ruined landscapes to locate the source of the signal in hopes of finding other survivors.

Directed by Ridley Scott, this adventure drama is the 33rd of 34 films in his career, following Gladiator II and preceding Treasure Island. The production was a collaboration between 20th Century Studios, TSG Entertainment, and Scott Free Productions, with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson. The ensemble cast features Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong.

With a budget of 110 million USD, the film earned 37 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6.6/10 based on 284 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The main character's dog, Jasper, was played by three different dogs. Each was trained for filming in various scenes: one rolled in the grass with its owner, the second sat still, and the third attacked. All three dogs looked very similar. The main character, played by Jacob Elordi, most often worked with a Belgian Malinois named Raksha. If Raksha happened to get distracted and run away during filming, those moments were kept in the movie, as they added a sense of spontaneity to the on-screen action.
  • Ridley Scott typically works with several cameras simultaneously (ranging from six to eleven) to spare the actors from the monotony of filming the same scenes repeatedly. Josh Brolin—who played Bangley—was so surprised by this that Scott even invited him into the editing trailer right on the set, where he showed him the work on a scene that had just been filmed. The producers involved in the film made it clear that Scott does not usually do this.
  • The film was shot in Bordano, a small town in northeastern Italy, in an open space where there had been neither grass nor trees before the filmmakers arrived.
