Dead Silence
Short description
After his wife Lisa is killed, Jamie Ashen receives a ventriloquist dummy that arrived by post around the time of her death. Convinced the figure is connected to the murder, he returns to his hometown of Raven's Fair to investigate. There he learns about Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist who was killed decades earlier after being accused in a child's disappearance and was buried with her collection of dolls. Jamie pursues the legend while a police detective treats him as the prime suspect in his wife's death.
James Wan directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Leigh Whannell, the partnership behind Saw. Dead Silence followed the first two Saw films and Death Sentence, and it is the fourth of the thirteen features Wan has directed to date. Ryan Kwanten plays Jamie, with Amber Valletta, Donnie Wahlberg, Bob Gunton, Laura Regan and Michael Fairman in supporting roles. Twisted Pictures and Evolution Entertainment produced the film with Universal Pictures, on a budget of about 20 million dollars.
Released in March 2007, the film took roughly 22 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. Audiences rate it around 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from about 108,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 2,500 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 from 85 reviews is well below those audience scores.
