Artie DeVanzo is an unemployed man in his thirties who drinks heavily and spends his time playing softball with a team that is not very good. What starts as a weekly pastime has become more about drinking and chasing women than about winning games. When the local league makes it clear that the team must either take the championship or lose its place in the competition for the following season, Artie pushes his teammates to get serious and turn their game around. Frank Sebastiano directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Artie Lange, who also produced and plays the lead role of Artie DeVanzo. The cast includes Ralph Macchio as Maz, Cara Buono as Linda, Anthony DeSando as Dennis Mangenelli, Jimmy Palumbo as Johnny Trinno and Joe Lo Truglio as Dave, with 29 credited cast members in total.
Made for a budget of 2 million USD, Beer League was released in September 2006 and runs 86 minutes. It is a comedy set in and around local softball, and it was the first film directed by Frank Sebastiano, who had worked as a writer before taking on this project. The film holds an IMDb rating of 5.9 from around 8,800 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.2 from 78 votes, suggesting a modest but somewhat larger audience on the first platform.
A film critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 13 reviews places the film below its audience scores on IMDb and TMDB.
