3 Idiots
Short description
Two friends set out to find a third who vanished years earlier, and the journey forces them back through their student days. In flashback, they recall Rancho, a free-thinking engineering student at one of India's most selective institutes, whose refusal to memorize and conform upends the lives of his roommates Farhan and Raju. His clashes with Viru Sahastrabuddhe, the college's rigid director known as "Virus," and his romance with the director's daughter Pia form the heart of the story. The present-day search carries its own complications, and the question of who Rancho really is stays open until late.
Rajkumar Hirani directed and co-wrote the film with Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi; Chopra produced it. It is Hirani's third feature, following Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. in 2003 and Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. Aamir Khan plays Rancho, with R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as his friends, Kareena Kapoor Khan as Pia, and Boman Irani as Virus.
Released in December 2009 at 171 minutes, the comedy-drama drew large audiences: its worldwide gross of 60 million dollars far exceeded its 550 million rupee budget, and it holds an 8.4 rating on IMDb from 479,000 votes and 8 on TMDB from 2,837 votes, against a critics' rating of 7.3 from 15 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film features real inventions by little-known residents of India. Remya Jose, a student from Kerala, invented a bicycle/washing machine, Mohammad Idris, a barber from Meerut, invented a bicycle-powered generator, and Jahanagir, an artist, invented a scooter-powered flour mill.
- Initially, it was planned to cast young, unknown actors in the lead roles. However, everyone who auditioned failed to demonstrate good chemistry between the characters, and the creators abandoned this idea. Aamir Khan volunteered for the lead role himself after learning the plot of the film.
- The idea to make a film based on Chetan Bhagat's novel came to Rajkumar Hirani after he read it during a break in filming "Lage Raho Munna Bhai 2," which was caused by the 2005 Mumbai floods.
