Short description
Set in 1970s Ireland and London, Breakfast on Pluto follows Patrick Braden, a young man who has known since childhood that he is different from those around him. Born in a small Irish town to a priest and a housekeeper who left soon after, Patrick grows up rejected by his community but survives on his wit and charm. Adopting the name Kitten, he travels to London to find the mother who abandoned him, encountering a world far bigger and stranger than the one he left behind. The film is a comedy-drama directed by Neil Jordan, who wrote the screenplay with Pat McCabe. It is the tenth of the fifteen films Jordan has directed, arriving between The End of the Affair and The Brave One.
Cillian Murphy plays Patrick, with Stephen Rea, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, Eva Birthistle and Ruth Negga among the cast of sixty-three credited performers. The production brought together British and Irish companies, including Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen.
Made for around twelve million dollars, the film earned roughly four million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from about twenty-six thousand votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.2, from a much smaller base of some four hundred and fifty voters. A critics' score of 6.3 from one hundred and twenty-one reviews places it below both audience ratings, suggesting viewers responded more warmly than reviewers did.
