Cool World
Short description
Cool World follows Jack Deebs, a cartoonist serving time for murder who has escaped his imprisonment by inventing a comic series about a raunchy animated realm called Cool World and its seductive star, Holli Would. Holli pulls Jack into that world, hoping to use him to become human, while detective Frank Harris, the only other person there, warns him that intimacy between humans and cartoons is forbidden. Holli pursues her goal anyway, and the chase spills into Las Vegas, putting both worlds at risk.
Ralph Bakshi directed the film, the eighth in the chronological list of his features, following Imagining America. Michael Grais and Mark Victor wrote the screenplay, Frank Mancuso Jr. produced it, and the blend of live action and animation stars Kim Basinger as Holli, Gabriel Byrne as Jack and Brad Pitt as Frank. The production, made by Paramount and Bakshi Animation, cost about 30 million dollars and returned roughly 14 million worldwide, a substantial shortfall.
Audience responses are modest and divided: on IMDb it holds 4.9 out of 10 from about 27,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from 832 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 out of 10, drawn from 51 reviews, places professional opinion below even the lower audience figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- The name Holly Wood is spelled Holli Would in English, but there is another spelling - Holly Wood, which is a reference to the well-known Los Angeles district called Hollywood.
- The characters parodied popular heroes from Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons, as decided by the directors – specifically rabbits, the bald old man, Geppetto and Pinocchio, and Daffy Duck.
- As part of a promotional campaign, Paramount Pictures placed a portrait of Holly Wood on the letter D in the Hollywood sign. This happened after the riots in Los Angeles. The studio paid $27,000 to the sign’s maintenance fund and another $27,000 to the Los Angeles restoration fund, and also paid two rangers for round-the-clock security of the sign with the portrait. However, local residents were not thrilled and began to hold pickets demanding the portrait be removed from the sign.
