The Wild Thornberrys Movie follows the Thornberry family, wildlife documentarians who travel the world filming nature programmes. While in Africa, twelve-year-old Eliza meets a shaman who grants her the ability to speak with animals, on the condition that she must keep the gift secret or lose it. After she defies that rule, she is sent away to a London boarding school, separating her from the wild animals she loves. She returns to Africa when she learns that poachers intend to slaughter a herd of elephants, and saving them may require giving up her power. The film adapts the Nickelodeon television series about the eccentric Thornberry clan.
Cathy Malkasian and Jeff McGrath directed, with Kate Boutilier writing the screenplay and Gábor Csupó and Arlene Klasky producing for Klasky-Csupo with Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies. The voice cast includes Lacey Chabert as Eliza, Tom Kane as the chimpanzee Darwin, Cree Summer as an elephant named Phaedra, and Tim Curry, Lynn Redgrave and Jodi Carlisle as members of the family, among 47 credited cast and 58 credited crew members.
Released in December 2002, the film runs 85 minutes. It was made for a budget of 35 million USD by the studio behind the series. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from over fifteen thousand votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.5 from around three hundred votes, while the film critics' score stands at 6.7 from 88 reviews. The Wild Thornberrys Movie was the first feature Malkasian and McGrath directed, followed years later by Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest.
