Clean and Sober

Daryl Poynter is a successful real estate salesman with a serious cocaine habit. After taking money that isn't his, he wakes up one morning beside a woman who has overdosed, and with his accounts suddenly short. With the police closing in, he checks into a rehabilitation clinic that promises anonymity, intending to hide out rather than face his problems. There he meets Craig, a former addict working as a counselor who sees through his evasions, and Charlie, a fellow patient he grows close to. His stay gradually shifts from a refuge into something more genuine.

Michael Keaton plays Daryl, with Kathy Baker as Charlie and Morgan Freeman as Craig. Glenn Gordon Caron directed from a screenplay by Tod Carroll; the film was produced by Tony Ganz and Deborah Blum for Warner Bros. and Imagine Entertainment. It runs 124 minutes.

Released in August 1988, the drama was Caron's first feature as director, ahead of Love Affair and Picture Perfect. It took in about 9 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 7,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from 96 votes; a critics' score of 6.1 from 18 reviews sits closer to the audience ratings than either alone might suggest.
