Winchester '73

Lin McAdam arrives in Dodge City with his friend High Spade, looking for Dutch Henry Brown, a man he has an old score to settle with. The two men end up facing each other in a marksmanship contest held as part of the town's celebrations; the prize is a prized Winchester rifle. Lin wins, but Dutch seizes the weapon and flees, and Lin sets off after him. The rifle passes through many hands along the way, while the pursuit continues.

Anthony Mann directed the film, the sixth of the twenty features he made in chronological order, following Border Incident and preceding Devil's Doorway. Borden Chase and Robert L. Richards wrote the screenplay, and Aaron Rosenberg produced it for Universal International Pictures. James Stewart heads the cast as Lin McAdam, with Shelley Winters as Lola Manners, Dan Duryea as Waco Johnnie Dean, Stephen McNally as Dutch Henry Brown, Millard Mitchell as High Spade and Charles Drake as Steve Miller, among a credited cast of sixty-five and a credited crew of forty-one. It runs 92 minutes.

Released in 1950, the western took about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from roughly 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from around 420 votes. A critics' rating of 8.7/10 from 33 reviews places it above both audience scores.
