A Native American veteran of the Civil War comes back to his home territory after serving with the Union army, where he was decorated for bravery at Gettysburg. He intends to settle down and raise cattle on his land. His plans are disrupted by white sheep ranchers who want the grassy range for themselves, and by a lawyer who turns the surrounding white community against him and his people. What begins as a dispute over land becomes a broader fight over the rights of Native Americans, with tragic results.
Devil's Doorway is a 1950 Western from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, directed by Anthony Mann and written by Guy Trosper. It was the seventh of the twenty films Mann directed, coming between Winchester '73 and The Furies, both released the same year, and it belongs to a run of Westerns he made in that period. Robert Taylor plays Lance Poole, with Louis Calhern, Paula Raymond, Marshall Thompson, James Mitchell and Edgar Buchanan among the credited cast of forty-six.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.2 from around 2,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from a much smaller number of votes, so its reputation rests on a relatively modest but appreciative audience.
