Kuffs
Short description
George Kuffs is a young San Francisco man with no job, no money and a girlfriend, Maya, who is pregnant. When his older brother Brad, who runs a private security patrol covering a neighborhood, is shot dead by a criminal, George inherits the business. He takes over the patrol, with the reluctant help of a police officer named Ted Bukovsky, and sets out to find his brother's killer while dealing with the criminals and corrupt figures operating in the district.
Released in 1992, Kuffs was directed by Bruce A. Evans, who wrote the screenplay with Raynold Gideon; Gideon also produced. It is the first of the two features Evans has directed, ahead of Mr. Brooks (2007). Christian Slater plays George, with Milla Jovovich as Maya, Tony Goldwyn as Ted Bukovsky, Bruce Boxleitner as Brad Kuffs, Troy Evans as Captain Morino and George De La Pena as Sam Jones, among a credited cast of fifty-three.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 21 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 12,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.8 from 238 votes, indicating a modest audience response that sits below the 4.5 out of 10 recorded from 19 critics' reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene with profanity was inserted into the script as a mockery of the PG-13 rating (children under 13 are discouraged from viewing) of the American Film Association. In this scene, one common swear word is bleeped out 12 times, but is clearly audible on the 13th repetition.
- The script was specifically written "for" Christian Slater.
