Nell Sweetzer is found alone and frightened in rural Louisiana, the sole survivor of a ritual that killed her family. Taken to New Orleans, she is placed in a home for girls and begins therapy, unable to recall the months leading up to the deaths. As she settles into her new life and forms new friendships, the demonic force that once possessed her returns, this time with a larger purpose in mind.
The 2013 horror thriller is a sequel to The Last Exorcism and was directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly, whose first feature it is in the chronological list of his work, followed by Lavender in 2016. The screenplay is by Damien Chazelle and Gass-Donnelly, and the producers include Eli Roth. Ashley Bell reprises the role of Nell, appearing alongside Julia Garner, Andrew Sensenig, Spencer Treat Clark, Judd Lormand and Muse Watson.
Made for a budget of five million dollars, the film took about fifteen million dollars worldwide, a return that made it financially worthwhile. Audience response was muted: on IMDb it holds a rating of 4 out of 10 from roughly eighteen thousand votes, and on TMDB it sits at 4.7 out of 10 from around six hundred votes. A critics' rating of 3.7 out of 10 from seventy reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
