Ryan, his wife Emily and their young daughter Leila move into a new home, where Ryan and his brother Mike find a video camera and a box of old tapes left behind in the garage. The tapes show two sisters, Katie and Kristie, and through the camera the brothers begin to see things that are not visible to the naked eye. When Leila starts talking about an invisible friend who visits her, the family finds itself facing a presence that seems to want their daughter.
The film is a found-footage horror entry directed by Gregory Plotkin, who had worked in the editing department on earlier installments of the series. It was his first feature as director, followed later by Hell Fest. Jason Pagan, Adam Robitel and Gavin Heffernan wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Ivy George, Dan Gill, Olivia Taylor Dudley and Chloe Csengery. Jason Blum and Oren Peli produced.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 79 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences were lukewarm: on IMDb it holds 4.6/10 from around 33,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3/10 from about 1,500 votes. A critics' rating of 3.7/10 from 75 reviews sits below both audience scores.
