A Man Called Horse

In 1825, an English aristocrat named Lord John Morgan is captured by a band of Sioux while on a hunting expedition in the American West. At first the tribe treats him as something less than a man, but he gradually learns their language, customs and ways of survival, and comes to be accepted among them. To be fully taken into the tribe, however, he must undergo a demanding ritual. Richard Harris plays Morgan, with Jean Gascon, Judith Anderson, Corinna Tsopei, Manu Tupou and Dub Taylor among the credited cast of twenty-six.

The film was directed by Elliot Silverstein, working from a screenplay by Jack DeWitt and produced by Sandy Howard and Frank Brill. It followed Silverstein's Cat Ballou, released five years earlier, and preceded The Car by seven years. Shot partly in Mexico with American backing, it runs 114 minutes and blends action, adventure, drama and Western elements.

On IMDb the film holds a 6.8 rating from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from roughly 242 votes. The larger IMDb sample suggests a fairly settled, moderately positive reputation, and the gap between the two scores is modest. Audience response has remained steady enough over the decades to keep the title visible among Westerns of its era.
