Night Shift is a 1982 American comedy about Chuck Lumley, a mild-mannered morgue employee who is moved to the night shift against his wishes. There he is paired with Bill Blazejowski, an excitable newcomer full of schemes for getting rich. When a sex worker who lives nearby mentions that her pimp has died, Bill proposes that he and Chuck take over the dead man's business, operating out of the morgue after hours. What begins as a way to occupy the quiet hours turns the mortuary into something far livelier, and puts both men at risk.
The film was directed by Ron Howard and written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, with Brian Grazer producing. It is the first of the 32 films Howard has directed in chronological order, ahead of Splash in 1984. Henry Winkler plays Chuck, Michael Keaton plays Bill and Shelley Long plays Belinda Keaton, with Gina Hecht, Pat Corley and Bobby Di Cicco among the credited cast of 61.
Made for 8 million dollars, Night Shift took about 21 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for a comedy of its size. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from 245 votes. A critics' score of 6.7 from 29 reviews places it slightly above the audience ratings on both sites.
