Uptown Girls
Short description
Molly Gunn has spent her life living off the fortune left by her late father, a rock star, and her days are filled with shopping and parties rather than responsibilities. When the man handling her money disappears with the inheritance, Molly is left with nothing and must find work for the first time. She takes a job as nanny to Ray Schleine, the young daughter of a busy music executive who has little time for her child. Ray is unusually grown-up for her age and guarded toward the string of caretakers who came before, so the two get off to a difficult start before slowly finding common ground.
Boaz Yakin directed the film, his third feature after Fresh and Remember the Titans, from a screenplay by Julia Dahl, Mo Ogrodnik and Lisa Davidowitz. Brittany Murphy plays Molly opposite Dakota Fanning as Ray, with Marley Shelton, Donald Faison, Jesse Spencer and Austin Pendleton among the credited cast of 49. The production, backed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and GreeneStreet Films, cost about 20 million dollars and returned roughly 45 million worldwide, a modest profit.
Audience response has been warmer than that of reviewers. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from more than 41,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from over 1,200 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 4 out of 10 across 113 reviews, well below both viewer scores. The film runs 92 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Brittany Murphy (full name Brittany Anne Murphy-Monjack, birth name Brittany Anne Bertolotti) (1977-2009) bought all the jewelry that her character wears in this film.
- Molly's electricity is turned off at home, however, the next morning she watches cartoons on television, and her answering machine works. The DVD release retained footage showing Molly extending an extension cord from another apartment and turning on the television.
- Huey, Donald Faison's character, was initially conceived as a rather unpleasant type. He was only made less negative later on.
- Dakota Fanning had no trouble performing the ballet rehearsal scene in front of an audience, as she had previously studied ballet.
- At the very end of the film, the musician Neil is shown playing guitar and singing while girls dance on stage. The next moment, he is shown clapping his hands while standing next to the stage, although the sound suggests he is still playing guitar and singing.
