Short description

Two hopelessly out of their class con-men attempt to pull off the largest bank heist of the 19th century — by gaining the enmity of the most famous bank robber in the world and the affection of a crusading newspaperwoman.

What's left behind the scenes

Following disastrous previews, Columbia Pictures heavily edited the film. Director Mark Rydell claimed that many of the movie's jokes suffered as a result.
The film significantly exceeded its budget and caused a serious financial crisis that almost bankrupted Columbia Pictures. The situation was saved by the Cinerenta fund of German dentists, which agreed to help co-finance other films from the studio.
