Harry and Walter Go to New York

Two small-time con men, Harry Digby and Walter Hill, arrive in New York hoping to make their fortune, but a bungled swindle lands them in prison. There they meet Adam Worth, a master thief with a major bank robbery in mind. Rather than work for him, the pair steal his plans and set out to pull off the heist themselves, an ambition far beyond their abilities. A newspaper reporter, Lissa Chestnut, learns of the scheme and becomes part of it, while the men also earn the hostility of the celebrated criminal whose plan they took.

Mark Rydell directed the film, which followed his 1972 western The Cowboys and was released in 1976, three years before The Rose. John Byrum and Robert Kaufman wrote the screenplay, and Don Devlin and Harry Gittes produced it for Columbia Pictures. Elliott Gould plays Walter and James Caan plays Harry; Diane Keaton is Lissa Chestnut, with Michael Caine as Adam Worth, Charles Durning as Rufus T. Crisp and Lesley Ann Warren as Gloria Fontaine. The film runs 115 minutes, and its credited cast numbers 70.

Audience response has been modest. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 from around 1,300 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.6 from 29 votes. Both point to a comedy that found a limited and only mildly enthusiastic viewership rather than a broad following.
