The Lodger is a 2009 American mystery thriller set in West Hollywood, where a detective named Chandler Manning investigates a series of murders targeting prostitutes along the Sunset Strip. The killer's methods echo those of Jack the Ripper, the notorious nineteenth-century London murderer who was never identified. As the case develops, Manning finds parallels between the current crimes and those of a serial killer convicted years earlier, raising the possibility that the wrong person was imprisoned. A second thread concerns a psychologically unstable woman who rents a room to a mysterious tenant and comes to suspect him of the killings. The two storylines converge as suspicion grows.
The film was directed by David Ondaatje, who also wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Michael Mailer. It draws on the 1927 silent film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock. Alfred Molina leads the cast as Manning, with Hope Davis as Ellen Bunting, Shane West as Street Wilkenson, Donal Logue as Bunting, Philip Baker Hall as Captain Smith and Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda. The production credits around forty cast members.
Released in January 2009, the film runs 95 minutes. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 24 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from 145 votes, a gap that indicates critics were considerably less receptive than viewers.
