Speechless

Julia Mann and Kevin Vallick are political speechwriters who meet and fall for each other during an election season in New Mexico. What neither realizes at first is that they work for rival candidates. Once the truth comes out, their romance is complicated by the campaign, and the two have to decide what matters more to them.

The film is a romantic comedy directed by Ron Underwood, his fourth feature after Tremors, City Slickers and Heart and Souls. Robert King wrote the screenplay, and Renny Harlin and Geena Davis produced. Michael Keaton and Geena Davis star as Kevin and Julia, with Bonnie Bedelia, Christopher Reeve, Ernie Hudson and Charles Martin Smith among the credited cast of twenty-four.

Released in December 1994, Speechless had a budget of about 38 million dollars and took roughly 25 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. Critics were unenthusiastic, giving it 4.4 out of 10 from 29 reviews, while audiences have been slightly warmer, rating it 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 5,700 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from a smaller number of votes. Both scores sit closer to average than to poor.
