Barbie in the Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, played by Barbie, who receives a wooden nutcracker soldier as a gift from her favourite aunt. When the Mouse King invades her room at night, the nutcracker comes to life to fight him off. Clara wakes and tries to help, but the Mouse King places a spell on her that shrinks her to toy size. She and the nutcracker then set out on a journey to find the Sugarplum Princess, the only one who can break the enchantment.
The film is an animated retelling of the classic Christmas ballet, using Tchaikovsky's music and ballet choreography. It was directed by Owen Hurley, the second of five films he directed in sequence between Casper's Haunted Christmas and Barbie in the Pink Shoes. The screenplay is by Rob Hudnut, Linda Engelsiepen and Hilary Hinkle. Kelly Sheridan voices Clara, Kirby Morrow voices the Nutcracker, and Tim Curry voices the Mouse King.
Released in 2001 and running 77 minutes, the film was produced by Mattel, Rainmaker Studios and Mainframe Entertainment. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.9 from 51 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.9 from 1,137 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 from 5 reviews indicates reviewers were far less enthusiastic than the audience.
