Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part I: Beginnings

Madoka Kaname is a fourteen-year-old student who leads a quiet life until she meets a magical creature named Kyubey. Alongside her friend Sayaka Miki, Madoka is offered the opportunity to have any wish granted in exchange for becoming a magical girl. This contract requires them to fight witches, dangerous entities born from curses. While another magical girl, Mami Tomoe, encourages them to join, a classmate named Homura Akemi tries to prevent Madoka from making the agreement. This fantasy thriller retells the first half of the original television series.

The film was produced by SHAFT and co-directed by a large team including Akiyuki Simbo, Yukihiro Miyamoto, Mamoru Hatakeyama, and others. For Simbo, this was the second film in his career, following Hurricane Polymar: Holy Blood. The voice cast features Aoi Yuki as Madoka, Chiwa Saito as Homura, and Eri Kitamura as Sayaka.

Released in 2012, the movie earned 6 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has been received positively by viewers, holding a rating of 7.6/10 on IMDb from 2,000 votes and an identical score of 7.6/10 on TMDB based on 157 votes.
