The Mother of Tears

The Mother of Tears follows Sarah Mandy, an American art student in Rome, who opens an ancient urn with her colleague Giselle. Inside are objects belonging to Mater Lacrimarum, the last surviving member of a trio of powerful witches. Its opening unleashes violence across the city: murders, suicides and attacks multiply, while witches from around the world gather in Rome to serve their mistress. Giselle is killed by the witch's servants and Sarah escapes, learning that she has supernatural abilities of her own and is the only one who can stop the Mother of Tears. Directed by Dario Argento, who wrote the screenplay with Jace Anderson and Walter Fasano, the film is the fifteenth of the seventeen features he has directed, arriving after Jenifer and before Dracula 3D. It is the closing chapter of a trilogy that began with Suspiria and Inferno.

Asia Argento, the director's daughter, plays Sarah Mandy. The cast also includes Cristian Solimeno as Detective Enzo Marchi, Adam James as Michael Pierce, Moran Atias as Mater Lachrimarum, Valéria Cavalli as Marta Colussi and Philippe Leroy as Guglielmo De Witt. It was produced by Myriad Pictures, Medusa Film, Sky Cinema and Opera Film Produzione on a budget of about four million dollars, and it earned roughly three million worldwide, less than its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 10 from 463 votes, indicating a poor reception from viewers.
