As I Lay Dying follows a poor farm family in Mississippi as they carry out the wish of their dying matriarch, Addie Bundren, to be buried in the nearby town of Jefferson. After her death, her husband Anse and their five children load her coffin onto a wagon and set out across the countryside, a journey that exposes the tensions and private burdens each of them carries. The trip proves longer and harder than expected, and the family's endurance is tested by the distance between their farm and the burial place.
The film is an adaptation of William Faulkner's 1930 novel of the same name. James Franco directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Rager, and also appears as the son Darl Bundren. The cast includes Tim Blake Nelson as Anse, Danny McBride as Vernon Tull, Logan Marshall-Green as Jewel, Ahna O'Reilly as Dewey Dell and Jim Parrack as Cash, among roughly twenty credited performers.
It was Franco's second feature as director, arriving between Good Time Max and In Dubious Battle in a filmography that continues through The Disaster Artist and Zeroville. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 87 votes, indicating limited and mixed audience response.
