Short description

Peter Gibbons works at a software company where the daily routine has worn him down. His girlfriend pushes him toward hypnotherapy, but the session goes wrong when the therapist collapses, leaving Peter in a permanent state of indifference. He stops showing up on time, ignores his boss's instructions, and says what he actually thinks. Instead of being fired, he is promoted, which gives him and two coworkers he is close to the chance to move money out of the company through a scheme involving a virus planted in its accounting systems.

Set in a suburban office park in Texas, the film was written and directed by Mike Judge. It followed his animated debut, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, released three years earlier. Ron Livingston plays Peter, Jennifer Aniston plays a waitress named Joanna, and David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Diedrich Bader and Stephen Root appear among the credited cast of 37. The production, from 20th Century Fox, cost about 10 million dollars and took in roughly 13 million worldwide, a modest return.

Audiences have rated the film 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb from over 307,000 votes and 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a far smaller number of votes, while a critics' rating stands at 7.1 out of 10 from 103 reviews. Judge went on to direct Idiocracy and Extract.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The Lamberge Ring is a graduation ring from the Earth Force Academy in the "Babylon 5" universe. Gary Cole wore this ring in the "Crusade" television series.
  • In the second episode of the seventh season of the animated series "Family Guy" (I Dream of Jesus), the main characters Stewie and Brian dispose of a record in the same way that the main characters of the film disposed of a fax.
  • Milton has his favorite red Swingline stapler on his desk. At the time of the film's release, the company did not manufacture red staplers, but the film's popularity forced them to create this line.
  • Two real companies were named after the film: Initech Ltd. (United Kingdom) and Initech LLC (USA).
