Short description

Elliot Brindle is a bright but timid social services employee who is struggling with mounting debts as his wedding approaches. A mysterious phone call tells him that hidden cameras are filming him for a game show, and that he can collect a large cash prize by completing thirteen tasks. Each completed task adds money to his account, but refusing or failing an assignment wipes out his accumulated winnings. Elliot carries out the first instructions without much trouble, and his bank balance grows quickly. As the tasks grow stranger and more dangerous, he finds himself unable to stop without losing what he has already earned, and his involvement draws the attention of the police.

The film is an American remake of the 2006 Thai movie 13 game sayawng. Daniel Stamm directed and co-wrote the screenplay with David Birke. It was Stamm's second feature, following his 2010 debut The Last Exorcism, and it came before Down, Prey for the Devil and Lockbox. Mark Webber plays Elliot, with Devon Graye as his brother Michael, Tom Bower as their father, Ron Perlman as Det. Chilcoat, Rutina Wesley as Shelby and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Vogler. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Steven Squillante and Kiki Miyake produced, and the production involved Blumhouse Productions, Dimension Films, Automatik Entertainment and IM Global.

Made for about 5 million dollars, the film received a critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 42 reviews. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 1,240 votes, indicating a modest but somewhat warmer response from viewers than from critics.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The thriller '13 Sins' is a remake of the horror comedy film '13' (Chukiat Sakveerakul, 2006). Ron Perlman specifically refrained from watching the 2006 film so as not to subconsciously form a preconceived notion of how he should perform his role.
  • George Coe's final role. The actor passed away on July 18, 2015, at the age of 86.
  • Two endings were filmed for the movie – an optimistic one and another where everything ends badly. The alternative ending can be found on Blu-ray releases.
