Short description

Susan Murphy is a California woman about to get married when a meteor carrying strange space material strikes her, causing her to grow to enormous size. The military captures her and holds her at a secret government facility, where she is renamed Ginormica and confined alongside a group of other monsters: the insect-headed scientist Dr. Cockroach, the ape-fish hybrid known as the Missing Link, the gelatinous B.O.B. and the giant Insectosaurus. When an alien robot lands on Earth and begins causing destruction, the President is persuaded to send this unlikely team into battle against the invaders, giving Susan and her companions a chance to act.

Monsters vs Aliens is a 2009 animated adventure from DreamWorks Animation, directed by Conrad Vernon and Rob Letterman and written by Wallace Wolodarsky, Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel, with Lisa Stewart producing. It was Vernon's second directorial feature, following Shrek 2, and Letterman's second, after Shark Tale; both went on to other animated and family films. The voice cast is led by Reese Witherspoon as Susan, with Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett and Kiefer Sutherland.

The film had a budget of 175 million USD and took in 382 million USD worldwide, a solid return on its cost. Audience scores sit close to the critics' rating of 6.5/10 from 216 reviews, with IMDb showing 6.4/10 from 188,000 votes and TMDB 6.3/10 from roughly 5,100 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When creating the episodes set in San Francisco, the authors were influenced by the famous car chases from the film “Bullitt” and the series “The Streets of San Francisco.” The directors wanted these scenes to look more like a live-action film than animation.
  • During the production of 'Monsters,' approximately 100 terabytes of disk space were created for data storage, more than 30 episodes were processed, which would have taken over 1,000 years to render on a single computer, and an explosion was filmed in one of the battle scenes, requiring more than three terabytes of disk space.
  • During the scene of Galactazar's address to the people in Tokyo, a screen on a building can be noticed in the left corner, showing the cartoon "Madagascar".
  • The alien's phrase – "nothing personal, it's just business" – is a reference to the famous saying of American gangster Al Capone.
  • The relationship between the general and the president is a kind of tribute from the authors to the work of Stanley Kubrick, and in particular to his film “Dr. Strangelove,” which is especially noticeable in the scenes at the command post.
  • On the general’s right side, instead of orders and medals, there is a Shrek badge.
  • To realistically depict the scene of Susan fleeing from an alien robot, a Styrofoam model of San Francisco was created, and Line Anderson – the project’s animator whose body shape is similar to Susan’s – was made to run through it.
  • “Monsters vs. Aliens” is the first film from DreamWorks Studios shot entirely in 3D using InTru™ 3D technology, combining the latest tools from DreamWorks Animation with Intel’s latest developments.
  • The name of one of the characters, B.O.B., stands for “benzoate – ostylizine – bicarbonate”.
