Beaches
Short description
Beaches follows two women who meet as children on an Atlantic City beach in the late 1950s and stay in each other's lives for decades. C.C. Bloom is a brash, ambitious performer from a working-class background; Hillary Whitney is a reserved, well-off young woman from a prominent family. Their friendship survives distance, letters, careers, marriages and separations, and is tested when both become involved with the same man. Bette Midler plays C.C. and Barbara Hershey plays Hillary, with John Heard, Spalding Gray, Lainie Kazan and James Read in supporting roles.
The film was directed by Garry Marshall, the fifth of the eighteen features he directed in chronological order, arriving between Overboard and Pretty Woman. Mary Agnes Donoghue wrote the screenplay, and Midler produced alongside Bonnie Bruckheimer and Margaret South. Made for about 20 million dollars, it took in roughly 57 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 287 votes, indicating a solid and fairly consistent audience response. A critics' score of 5.1 from 46 reviews places it lower with reviewers than with viewers.
