Short description
In present-day Alabama, unhappily married housewife Evelyn Couch strikes up an unlikely friendship with Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman she meets while visiting a relative in a nursing home. Ninny's stories carry Evelyn back to the small town of Whistle Stop in the 1920s, where the headstrong Idgie Threadgoode and the gentler Ruth Jamison built a life together running a café known for its fried green tomatoes. Their bond survives hardship and Ruth's escape from a violent marriage, though a killing in their circle leaves questions hanging over the town. As the tale unfolds piece by piece, Evelyn draws strength from it to change her own life.
Jon Avnet directed from a screenplay he wrote with Fannie Flagg and Carol Sobieski, and he produced alongside Jordan Kerner. This was Avnet's first feature as director, ahead of films including The War, Up Close & Personal, Red Corner and Three Christs. Kathy Bates plays Evelyn, with Jessica Tandy as Ninny, Mary Stuart Masterson as Idgie, Mary-Louise Parker as Ruth, and Cicely Tyson and Stan Shaw among a credited cast of forty-two.
Made for about 11 million dollars, the film took roughly 119 million worldwide, a large return on its budget. Its audience ratings sit at 7.7 on IMDb across 91,000 votes and 7.7 on TMDB, while critics' reviews averaged 6.6, so viewers rated it more warmly than reviewers did.
