Fifty years after a nuclear war, the surviving nations have abolished open warfare and settled territorial disputes another way. Two opposing superpowers, an American-led bloc and a Russian confederation, each field a giant piloted machine, and matches between these robots decide who controls contested land. The prize in the story is Alaska, and the American side puts its hopes in a pilot named Achilles, who is due to face the experienced Russian champion Alexander in the deciding bout.
Stuart Gordon directed the film, which followed Re-Animator, From Beyond and Dolls in his filmography. Joe Haldeman wrote the screenplay, and Albert Band produced. Gary Graham plays Achilles, with Anne-Marie Johnson as Athena, Paul Koslo as Alexander, Robert Sampson as Commissioner Jameson, Danny Kamekona as Dr. Matsumoto and Hilary Mason as Professor Laplace. The credited cast runs to forty people.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide, a small return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 8,100 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.5 out of 10, from 162 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from five reviews places it below both audience scores.
