Encounters of the Spooky Kind

Cheung, known around his village as a man who fears nothing, is goaded into spending a night in a haunted temple. The challenge is not as simple as it seems: his wife wants him out of the way and has arranged for a corrupt Taoist priest to do away with him during the night. What follows is a struggle against spirits, zombies and other supernatural forces, with a colleague stepping in to help him fight back.

Sammo Hung directs and stars as Bold Cheung in this 1980 Hong Kong production, which mixes action, comedy, horror and fantasy. It is the fourth of the sixteen films he has directed, following Enter the Fat Dragon and preceding Winners & Sinners. Hung wrote the screenplay with Wong Ying, Raymond Chow Man-Wai produced, and the cast includes Paul Chung Fat, Wu Ma, Lam Ching-Ying, Peter Chan Lung and To Siu-Ming among thirty credited performers.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 3,200 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 105 votes. The larger and stronger sample on IMDb points to a durable following for the film, while the smaller TMDB group is only somewhat less favourable.
