A Hoof Here, a Hoof There is a tragicomedy about a group of financially stable friends who spend their time drinking and pursuing casual romantic encounters. The carefree lifestyle of Pepe, an auditor, along with Dědek, a veterinarian, and František, a restaurant manager, and their partners is interrupted when Pepe loses consciousness and is hospitalized.

The film was directed by Věra Chytilová, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Pavel Škapík. In her career, she directed Daisies in 1966 and Panelstory or Birth of a Community in 1981 before making this production, followed by Traps in 1998. Produced by Filmové studio Barrandov in Czechoslovakia, the movie features a cast including Tomáš Hanák, Milan Šteindler, David Vávra, Ivana Kuntová, Tereza Kučerová, and Renata Becerrová.
