Fruitvale Station follows Oscar Grant, a young Black man living in Oakland, California, through the final day of 2008 and into the first hours of New Year's Day 2009. The film depicts Oscar moving through his ordinary routines and encounters with family, friends and strangers, including his girlfriend Sophina and his mother Wanda, as he prepares for a night out in the city. The story takes on its weight from the knowledge that his path leads to a confrontation with police at the Fruitvale transit station.
Ryan Coogler wrote and directed the film, his first feature, working from real events. Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, with Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand, Chad Michael Murray and Ahna O'Reilly among the cast. Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi produced. Running 85 minutes, it is a drama set in the Bay Area.
Released in the summer of 2013, the film reached a worldwide box office of about 18 million dollars, a strong return for a low-budget independent production. On TMDB it holds a 7.4 rating from roughly 1,500 votes, and its critics' rating stands at 8.1 from 216 reviews, placing critical approval notably higher than the general audience score. Coogler went on to direct Creed, the Black Panther films and Sinners.
