Mother of George is a drama about a Nigerian couple, Adenike and Ayodele Balogun, building a life together in Brooklyn. After a traditional Yoruba wedding, Adenike is given a new name in honour of a son not yet conceived, and the pressure to have a child shapes the months that follow. As the couple struggles with infertility, Adenike finds herself pulled between the expectations of her Yoruba heritage and her life in the United States, leading her toward a decision that could save or destroy her marriage.
Andrew Dosunmu directed the film, which was released in 2013 and followed by Where Is Kyra? in 2018. Darci Picoult wrote the screenplay, and Patrick Cunningham, Carly Hugo and Lars Knudsen produced. Danai Gurira plays Adenike opposite Isaach De Bankolé as Ayodele, with Yaya DaCosta, Tony Okungbowa, Bukky Ajayi and Angélique Kidjo in supporting roles. The film is a Nigerian and American co-production from Parts and Labor, Oscilloscope, Maybach Film Productions and JustFilms / Ford Foundation.
On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from a modest number of votes, suggesting a limited audience response.
